Ponyboy Curtis is the main character of the Outsiders, and the book is played out through his eyes. He is the youngest of all the greasers, but is also different as unlike most of the other greasers, he has an interest in school and trying to do good in it. Also unlike many of the other greasers he is pretty sensitive and down to earth, which he shows many times throughout the book, and it's how he gets one of the Soc's girlfriend to like him so much. He is different from the rest because through the events that have happened in the book such as the death of his best friend Johnny, he has realized that he wants more in his life, and that he wants to see a changed community, not one where there is constant fighting between gangs. He realizes that the Soc's aren't that different from the Greasers. To some of the greasers he seems like the weakest one, because he sometimes doesn't live up to the Greaser standard, but I think he is strong for being able to want to choose a different life for himself.
Do you think Ponyboy is weak for not being the typical Greaser, always wanting to fight and beat up the Socs?
No I do not think he is weak because he is doing what he wants to do and he is not getting caught up in gang. He wants to do well in school and wants to see the gangs settle there differences peacefully.
ReplyDeleteIs Ponyboy weak for wanting to do better than his family and friends? To some, maybe - to me, not at all. It doesn't surprise me that the youngest sees something negative in their family or the community, and decides not to go down that path, it happens all the time.
ReplyDeleteWhy do you think this happens with the youngest in a family? How about the middle child? Don't they usually rebel?
DeleteI don't think that Pony boy is weak for wanting better in his life. Ponyboy has been around to see what the two gangs do to each other. He might want to choose a better path avoiding what happens between the two gangs.
